Othello’s on Trial!
For first degree murder!
And you make the decision!
Yes, that’s right, the Bard’s Board Barristers are presenting their fifth annual Mock Trial event on February 26, 2013, right here at the theater. Othello will be put on trial for premeditated first degree murder in the killing of his wife, Desdemona. Is he guilty of this charge? Or, rather, was he merely Iago’s pawn, or did he otherwise suffer from delusions or diminished capacity that legally excuse his actions?
We will all be grappling with these issues on February 26. After a reception that begins at 5:30 p.m., giving you a chance to mingle with members of Central Florida’s legal, business and artistic communities, we will proceed to the theater to decide Othello’s fate. Our actors from the play itself will be there, in character, matching wits with top flight practicing attorneys representing the State of Venice and Othello. After the witness examinations and closing arguments, you will cast your vote for guilty or not guilty. The decision will then be reviewed by a panel of outstanding judges from our community.
The Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF is unique in annually producing such an event. Get your tickets now – they’re going fast. Either visit the box office or go online at http://www.orlandoshakes.org. You won’t want to miss it!
