Behind the scenes at Orlando Shakespeare Theater

Corsets, Posters, and Goofy Puns!

The Acting/Education Interns

The 2010-2011 Acting/Education Interns

Hi everybody!

My name is Kristin, and I’m one of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s acting interns for the 2010-2011 season. I’m a recent graduate of Ohio University’s BFA acting program, and am thrilled to be spending my first snowless January ever in Orlando! The year may have just started, but rehearsals for Orlando Shake’s upcoming productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Pride and Prejudice (in rotating rep!) are in full swing.

I’ve never gotten the chance to rehearse two shows at once before, and I gotta say… it’s awesome! Between ballroom dancing and dialect work for Pride…, the physical exploration of fairy movement (while wearing corsets) in Midsummer…, and vast amounts of text and table work for both, the directors have definitely been keeping us busy. The production team and the cast have such a positive energy, and I can feel the ensemble gaining strength and getting closer as a group as rehearsals go on. We open Midsummer… at the end of January, and Pride… at the beginning of February… it’s hard to believe we’re already that close!

In addition to rehearsals, the acting interns are also responsible for administrative office hours. As an intern working with the Marketing department, I spent some time after Wednesday’s rehearsal putting up posters in the College Park area. It was a chance to walk around and enjoy the beautiful weather… and promote the shows we’re working on, of course! We’ve also got people hanging up posters all over Orlando, so keep an eye out for them!

At today’s rehearsal, I’m hoping to recruit some of the cast to come to trivia tonight! The Orlando Shakes interns have a weekly tradition of going out to eat at one of the many Orlando restaurants that host a weekly trivia contest. We’re always looking for new trivia teammates, as we seem to have amassed just enough knowledge to almost place in the top three teams every week. Someday, victory shall be ours… but it’s fun anyway. Call me a big nerd, but my favorite part of trivia every week is trying to come up with goofy puns on the titles of Shakespeare’s plays to use as our team name. The holiday season allowed us to come up with such gems as “Santa-ny and Cleopatra,” “Much ado About Christmas,” and “Elfth Night.” Since we’re also doing Pride and Prejudice, we also came up with “Yuletide and Prejudice” and “Sleighride and Prejudice.” Now that the holidays are drawing to a close, we’ll have to find a new gimmick for our team name… any suggestions?
